Newest SCS Gluten-Free Products Standard Version Released to Support Needs of Consumers

SCS Standards announces the release of the latest version of its Gluten-Free Products Standard, serving the needs of millions of people with gluten sensitivity or celiac disease. SCS’ Gluten-Free certification (SCS-107, Version 2.0) uses proven and trusted methodologies to ensure consumers receive products that meet the most stringent gluten-free requirements available.

Up to 18% of the global population suffers from some level of gluten sensitivity, and 1 out of 100 people has celiac disease, which compromises the body’s ability to digest gluten and can lead to debilitating illness. In response, SCS launched the Gluten-Free Products Standard in the spring of 2021.

The standard now includes enhanced ingredient documentation, and testing requirements were streamlined and expanded.

Gluten-intolerant individuals and those with celiac disease cannot rely on allergen-free products that only address wheat. There are many lesser-known sources of gluten, such as rye, barley, triticale, spelt, farina, kamut, farro, and couscous. The standard accounts for these, including all potential vectors for introduction into the supply chain.

“Our standard provides the necessary assurance for individuals with celiac disease and those gluten-sensitive to consume certified products with confidence,” said Lucy Anderson, SCS Global Services Director.

Starting November 1, 2022, all audits will be conducted against SCS Gluten-Free Standard Version 2.0. Existing certificate holders will transition to the new version of the standard upon the expiration of their current certificate.
